Green light for dedicated bus street in Mitcham
A new bus-only street opened in Mitcham Town Centre in August.
The dedicated two-way road uses part of the previously pedestrianised London Road, and cuts across the Fair Green, re-joining Upper Green East and allowing buses to bypass the busy-one-way system at Raleigh Gardens on their way northbound to Tooting.
The decision to open up a bus-only road forms part of the Rediscover Mitcham initiative, a three-year improvement programme to revitalise the neglected town centre area.
Councillor Martin Whelton, Merton Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, environment and housing, said: “The new bus route is an integral part of the improvements we’re making to Mitcham town centre and is the final phase of the works on the Fair Green”.
The new bus-only street is expected to bring people directly into the shopping area of the town, improving the retail experience for both shoppers and local businesses.
Whelton added: “We can all be proud of Mitcham, its smart market stalls, convenient shopping and the beautiful Fair Green with the restored Victorian clock tower and landscaped gardens."
