Leisure centre on track
A new fitness centre in Morden is set to open this autumn, as the final stages of building work get underway.
The Morden Leisure Centre on London Road will replace the 1960s Morden Park Pools and includes a 25m, six-lane pool, a large second pool with moveable floor for aqua aerobics; parent and toddler classes, diving; a fitness suite with around 100 stations; a large community room and a cafe.
The building exterior has been fully constructed; both swimming pools are being tiled and the final mechanical and electrical equipment is being installed, to be followed by painting, decorating and flooring.
Leader of Merton Council, Stephen Alambritis, said: "It is hard to believe that construction on the site started just under a year ago and our vision of creating a facility for everyone is close to becoming a reality. It has been particularly important to me that the leisure centre is accessible to everyone in our community and we have made sure that certain features are included, so the new facility can be enjoyed for generations to come."
Once the works are complete, the council will hand the site over to Greenwich Leisure, the company which currently manages Morden Park Pools, Wimbledon Leisure Centre and the Canons Leisure in Mitcham; it will open the leisure centre to the public shortly afterwards.
The original Morden Park Pools will be demolished and returned to green space once the centre opens.
