Metal yard plans scrapped
Plans to demolish a Mitcham scrap metal yard and build a block of flats in its place have been refused by Merton Council.
A planning application was submitted in July last year to rebuild the closed Scrap Metal Merchant Jack Sparrowhawk & Sons site in Commonside East as a four-storey building comprising 28 apartments.
The objection mainly came as the yard sits adjacent to the designated Mitcham Green Conservation area; a planning inspector cited concerns over a lack of amenity space, and the flats exerting undue pressure on already limited parking in the area.
